A short-list of What You Can Do!
Simple things you can do to help our environment

  • Recycle junk mail > The average family gets about 1 ½ trees worth of junk mail per month!
  • Snip 6-pack rings before throwing them away. This prevents them from getting stuck around animals’ necks or being swallowed.
  • Try not to use a lot of paper towels. It’s best to use rags instead, so you’re not wasting paper.
  • Recycle your aluminum cans and glass bottles > The energy from recycling one aluminum can could run a television for 3 hours, and the energy from recycling one glass bottle will light a 100 watt light bulb for 4 hours!
  • Conserve Water > When brushing your teeth, just use enough water to wet the toothbrush and rinse it off. If you leave the sink running the whole time, you could be wasting up to 6 gallons of water every time you brush your teeth!
  • Plant a tree! Every grown tree cleans about 13 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air per year!
  • Recycle paper shopping bags & re-use plastic ones > The plastic bags that you can’t reuse can be returned to most stores for them to recycle.
  • Be careful about using pesticides and weed killers. They can be very damaging to the environment, especially when used right before it rains, because they wash down into lakes and streams.
  • Use Styrofoam as little as possible. It breaks down very slowly, and releases toxic chemicals into our atmosphere.
  • Recycle paper! It takes 30 to 55% less energy to recycle paper than it does to make new paper, not to mention the fact that it costs fewer trees!
  • When you go to the beach, you can spend 10 minutes picking up trash before you start to play. You’ll have more fun not having to look at the trash, and you’re helping the wildlife too!
  • Turn off electronics and lights when not in use. You can save a lot of energy just by turning things off when you’re done!
  • Don’t leave the refrigerator door open. This wastes energy. Try to figure out what you want before opening the door and close it quickly when you’re done.
  • If you have an older style toilet, you can put a bottle of water in the back to save one or two gallons per flush. Ask one of your parents if you have a low-flow toilet. If you do, don’t do this because the toilet is already saving as much water as it can.
